The Colombo Stock Exchange came under notable selling pressure on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, with both benchmark indices closing firmly lower as weakness spread across the broader market.

The All Share Price Index declined by 137.81 points, or 0.64%, to close at 21,479.07, while the S&P Sri Lanka 20 Index fell by 43.63 points, or 0.72%, to end the session at 6,040.91.

The ASPI opened around the 21,630 level before declining steadily through the morning, falling below 21,550 and approaching 21,500 by midday. A brief afternoon recovery helped the index regain some ground, but renewed selling pressure towards the close pushed the ASPI down to 21,479.07. The S&P SL20 followed a similar downward trajectory, reflecting weakness among several large-cap counters.

Total market turnover reached LKR 2.04 billion, with approximately 80.22 million shares changing hands during the session.

The Capital Goods sector dominated trading activity, generating LKR 993.83 million in turnover from approximately 43.37 million shares. John Keells Holdings accounted for the majority of sector activity, recording LKR 699.23 million in turnover.

Crossing transactions contributed approximately LKR 760.30 million, representing around 37% of total equity turnover. John Keells Holdings recorded the largest combined crossing activity, with six crossings totaling approximately LKR 670.41 million. Around 33.69 million shares changed hands through these crossings at LKR 19.90 per share.

Foreign investors continued to remain net sellers, recording a net foreign outflow of LKR 605.97 million during the session.

Market breadth reflected significant selling pressure, with only 48 securities advancing against 171 decliners, resulting in an advance-to-decline ratio of just 0.28. The heavily negative breadth indicated that the weakness extended well beyond a limited number of index-heavy counters.

C T Holdings emerged as the strongest positive contributor to the ASPI, adding 10.48 points to the index. Melstacorp, SMB Finance non-voting, Harischandra Mills and Ceylon Tobacco Company also provided some support.

Sampath Bank recorded the largest negative contribution, reducing the ASPI by 17.68 points. Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank, Lion Brewery and Bukit Darah were also among the major drags on the index.

Among notable trades, John Keells Holdings recorded the highest individual counter turnover at LKR 699.23 million, followed by AMSL.N with LKR 176.48 million and Melstacorp with LKR 158.51 million.

Overall, the session marked a clear deterioration in near-term market momentum, with losses across both benchmark indices accompanied by heavily negative market breadth and continued foreign selling. The sharp increase in decliners suggested that profit-taking and selling pressure had broadened across the market following the recent upward run.
