DIMO partners with Israel’s HomeBiogas to turn organic waste into clean renewable energy

DIMO, a leading diversified conglomerate in Sri Lanka, partnered with HomeBiogas, a global leader in developing off-grid biogas systems based in Israel, to introduce a host of HomeBiogas products which enable people and businesses in Sri Lanka to transform their organic waste into self-made clean cooking gas and organic liquid fertiliser.

Through this partnership, DIMO introduces three biogas systems to the Sri Lankan market. The HomeBiogas system 2 is for small-scale households (urban and pre-urban areas), the HomeBiogas system 4 is for households with larger backyard space and HomeBiogas system 6 caters to businesses such as small restaurants and farms, each converting organic waste into clean cooking gas and organic liquid fertiliser.  Each system has four major components, the digestive tank, the gas tank, the inlets, and the outlets. Additionally, gas stoves and accessories such as gas filters will also be provided. The complete installation process of each system takes approximately two hours.

Ranjith Pandithage, Chairman & Managing Director of DIMO said, “We believe that this is a sustainable approach, which will enable us to reduce the country’s carbon footprint and find solutions for issues such as sourcing clean energy, waste management, and access to organic fertiliser. DIMO is proud to partner HomeBiogas to introduce these solutions to the nation and to continue fuelling the dreams and aspirations of all Sri Lankans.”

Once the system is installed at either the residence or business location, the digestive tank must be fed with a mix of manure and water and kept for 21 days for activation. The digestive tank must be kept on a flat surface while being exposed to sunlight. Once activated, the system will convert organic waste into cooking gas and liquid fertiliser and users can feed their organic waste to continue the process. All three types of biogas systems produce gas that is sufficient for 2 to 6 cooking hours and can produce 8L to 120L liquid fertiliser from 4 to 12 liters of organic waste or animal manure, per day, depending on their capacities.

Rajeev Pandithage, Executive Director of DIMO said, “This is an ideal economical solution for the rural farmers as this will fulfill the organic fertilizer requirement while providing access to clean cooking gas that will ensure a sustainable agriculture with minimal effort, simply by recycling organic waste.”

“HomeBiogas systems obtained a European CE certificate for safety.  The digestive tanks included in these systems are made from durable, high-quality material with a lifespan of 15 years and are easy to transport and install. The systems are also equipped with filters, sealed tanks, and gas release valves to ensure the utmost safety of the users. Moreover, HomeBiogas is an ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 Certified company”, he further added.

DIMO has already installed HomeBiogas systems in Polonnaruwa – Kandakaduwa – Army Farm, Kandy -Digana – Mid Country Livestock Development and Training Center and Agarapathana – Manikpalama – National Livestock Development Board (NLDB) Farm. Sharing his experience on HomeBiogas systems Dr. Suneth Disnaka, General Manager at NLDB said “The HomeBiogas systems come with many greatly beneficial features. They fit the aesthetic of the new generation, and the installation and maintenance processes are also convenient. These systems are manufactured using high-quality material to minimise damage to the environment while the above-ground installation minimises risk, as no digging needs to take place. I strongly believe that they create a positive and sustainable impact.”

These biogas systems are introduced to the market at reasonable costs and consist of minimum maintenance costs. They can be installed in any geographical location and DIMO has already installed them in various geographical areas around the country. As the local partner of HomeBiogas, DIMO, with over 8 decades of excellence in the engineering sphere, will facilitate the installation and service of these systems around the country.
