Cleantech commences Solid Waste Management Services at New Manning Market – Peliyagoda
Ensuring Cleanliness and Hygiene of the marketplace
Cleantech –a turnkey waste management company established in 2002 – has partnered with the Urban Development Authority (UDA) to provide innovative waste management services at the New Manning Market in Peliyagoda.
From an overall hygiene management of the marketplace to minimising waste collection, recycling and creating community awareness on best practices in waste management, Cleantech has been working in conjunction with the Urban Development Authority to foster a culture of conservation and environmental awareness amongst market vendors and customers.
The primary goal of this partnership – as advised by State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal and Community Cleanliness Hon. (Dr.) Nalaka Godahewa – is to minimise the final disposal of waste in the marketplace. As a result, several initiatives such as waste to energy, composting and bio-gas generation are being explored as alternate means to final disposal.
“We have already conducted several awareness programmes, leaflet campaigns and street dramas on conservation and waste segregation. In our efforts to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, we have been exploring options on organic waste for biogas production, composting, animal feed production, and so on,” stated M.P.J Seneviratne, Chief Manager, Cleantech.
Some of Cleantech’s services at New Manning Market include: mechanised sweeping, an overall cleaning of the marketplace, drainage systems and gullies; maintenance of green areas, roads and parking spaces; cleaning of restrooms and other common areas; and enforcement of waste segregation and proper disposal practices. Our aim is to minimise the spread of disease while maintaining a hygienic and pleasant environment for vendors and customers alike.
Cleantech is proud to introduce advanced machinery such as town sweepers and split compactors to Sri Lanka. The split compactor has been instrumental in providing waste management services to COVID-19-impacted areas. The dual chambers allow for the simultaneous collection of wet garbage and recyclables, thereby minimising risk and exposure to those quarantined in their homes.
Although most of the mechanised sweeping takes place at night in order to avoid traffic congestion, the town sweeper – being small enough to navigate through traffic – will be extensively used to sweep roads during the daytime as well. In addition, all staff members have been issued complete PPE kits and are guided by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) and PHI at all times.
Cleantech carries a long history in managing and providing innovative waste management solutions. Over the years, it has diversified into several sectors including e-waste and sanitation management, landscaping and environmental infrastructure support services – all of which have been significant milestones for the company. Today, Cleantech is the market leader in waste management with a workforce of over 2000 members – including environmental specialists, environmental engineers, task-specialised staff and skilled labourers – and a fleet of 150 vehicles and proliferating facilities.
