Lütfü Turgut, Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye to Sri Lanka, emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral trade relations. He highlighted opportunities for Sri Lankan exporters in several sectors while also pointing to collaboration opportunities, especially given the growing importance of governance and ethical trade standards, particularly for exporters seeking integration into global supply chains, addressing the recently held AGM of the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka

“Sri Lankan firms that demonstrate strong governance and ethical practices will find themselves well-positioned to partner with Turkish companies integrated into the international supply chains. Of course, entering the Turkish market requires careful planning, as in all other markets.”

He noted that Sri Lanka, much like Turkey, occupies a strategic location. This advantage carries responsibilities, such as doing the best to ensure regional stability , diversifying energy sources and strengthening export-oriented economies against external shocks.

He concluded by highlighting that conflicts, rising protectionism and shifting trade dynamics pose challenges to all nations. “Yet amidst these uncertainties, trade remains a driving force for resilience and cooperation. Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities, strengthen our economic ties and contribute to a more stable and prosperous region.”

Reelected President of the NCE Indhra Kaushal Rajapaksa in his address, reflected on a year shaped by policy shifts and economic transition, noting that institutions such as the NCE must remain steady and proactive during periods of national change.

He highlighted the Chamber’s engagement with newly appointed ministers and officials, as well as involvement with government authorities, aimed at ensuring that exporter concerns are reflected in national policy discussions.

“Our role has never been limited to simply representing exporters. It is also to serve as a bridge between policy and practice,” he said, noting that the Chamber continues to align national strategies with the realities faced by exporters. A central focus of the President’s address was the expansion of regional export development, strengthening regional linkages and connecting suppliers and producers from across the country with exporters to develop inclusive supply chains. The NCE also expanded its Aspiring Exporters Programme, providing support through training, advisory sessions and access to finance, with the aim of expanding the number of exporters in Sri Lanka. These initiatives, he noted, were aimed at broad-based export growth and balanced economic development.

The President further highlighted efforts to strengthen collaboration with academic institutions, to address workforce shortages and promote research-driven innovation and value addition. He also noted the Chamber’s engagement with foreign missions, overseas trade chambers and policy-making institutions to support exporters and strengthen market access.

“As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the National Chamber of Exporters of Sri Lanka, we not only reflect on our four proud decades of service but also ponder the responsibility that lies ahead,” he said, adding that the Chamber would continue to focus on innovation, sustainability and ethical trade practices.
