Six days of festive traditions, vibrant flavors, and timeless rituals to welcome the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in style

DoubleTree by Hilton Weerawila Rajawarna Resort is set to host the “Rajawarna Soorya Mangalya 2025”, an immersive, six-day cultural celebration of Sri Lanka’s cherished Sinhala and Tamil New Year. Taking place from 11-16 April, the event invites guests from near and far to experience vibrant traditions, authentic cuisines and timeless festivities.

The celebrations kick off on 11 April with hands-on preparation of traditional sweets like Mung Kevum and Kokis at the scenic lakeside Woolf’s Deck. On 12 April, guests can experience the lively ‘Kadamandiya’ (Village Shop) at the gazebos and gardens, complete with traditional food stalls, live cooking demonstrations, artisan crafts, and live raban (oriental music) performances, concluding with a festive dinner buffet at Spoonbill restaurant.

 On 13 April, children take centerstage during the “DoubleTree Kiddo’s Awurudu Festival”, featuring fun-filled cultural games and activities. The festivities extend into the evening with the Kadamandiya, live music, and a special DoubleTree by Hilton Weerawila Rajawarna Resort Singithi Awurudu Kumara and Kumariya competition at Spoonbill Deck from 7:00 pm onwards.

The New Year’s Day celebration on 14 April begins auspiciously with a ceremonial milk boiling at the lobby, symbolizing prosperity and blessings for the year ahead. The program also includes classic Awurudu games for adults and the highly anticipated Awurudu Kumara and Kumariya competition later in the evening.

On 15 April, guests can participate in a special cookery demonstration at the BBQ Hut from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm, followed by an afternoon of traditional games, live music, and an evening buffet at Spoonbill with live entertainment.

The celebrations conclude meaningfully on 16 April with the sacred ‘Hisa Thel Gema’ ritual at the lobby, symbolizing new beginnings. alongside a fun-filled Peduru Party offering traditional melodies, village games, and handcrafted goods.
