Australia’s MDF, Thema collection join hands to promote sustainable and wellness tourism

Australia’s Market Development Facility (MDF), in collaboration with Thema Collection, is set to bring together Sri Lankan tourism stakeholders to promote sustainable and wellness tourism as key drivers of the country’s future tourism growth.

The industry dialogue, titled “Positioning Sri Lanka as a Sustainable & Wellness Destination,” will be held on August 21 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Hatch Colombo, with the participation of tourism industry leaders, hoteliers, policymakers and other stakeholders.

The initiative seeks to accelerate Sri Lanka’s transition towards climate-conscious, high-value experiential tourism by encouraging data-driven sustainability practices, carbon accounting and authentic wellness offerings.

Sri Lanka has emerged as a leading global wellness destination, being named the No. 1 Top Trending Wellness Destination for 2026 by BookRetreats.com. The country’s combination of Ayurveda and traditional medicine, biodiversity, natural landscapes and relatively affordable wellness experiences has strengthened its appeal among international wellness travellers.

Deputy Minister of Tourism Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe said Sri Lanka’s rich wellness heritage and biodiversity provide a strong foundation for positioning the country as a world-class destination for mindful travellers.

Australian High Commissioner Matthew Duckworth said Australia remained committed to supporting Sri Lanka’s tourism sector through expertise, private-sector innovation and internationally recognised sustainability practices.

Thema Collection Chairman Chandra Wickramasinghe and MDF Country Director Sri Lanka Maryam Piracha also stressed the importance of measurable sustainability standards, community empowerment and environmentally responsible tourism development.
